I'm not really good on the spot. If a similar situation happens again, I'll definitely try to be more assertive though. But you see, when that happened a couple of years ago, it was only a month or so after the Boston marathon bombings, so I'm pretty sure all police and law enforcement were on high alert...

You need to assert your rights next time, the mall cops at a very high end mall near me always look at me suspiciously but one time I confronted them and asked if it was illegal to walk around the parking lot and they shut up after that, I still get evil glances and such but they know unless they want a lawsuit they'd do best to let me be.
