Description Nice 918/LaF combo. I hope everyone's Christmas Eve is going well so far, and hopefully everyone's having a happy holidays. I just wanted to briefly bring up a discussion topic that could be discussed in the comments. What's with the recent photos that have been featured? Some are really sub-par spots and they're really far away, yet some great spots aren't getting featured. Should features be based on the spot itself, the shot composition, or a mix of both?
EB-01 - fair point. I do try to give a lot more leeway for very rare exotics. If the photo truly looks like a random spotting on the street, the quality can be a lot lower. But if it's in a parking lot, looks like it's near a race, show, dealer, shop, etc, then it still has to be good quality.
Kind of like @waddle2gracious said most of us joined to share the cars that we see and some of the time you don't have enough time to get a good pic. I used to just look at the cars before I joined and all I wanted to see and what most people probably want to see is exotic cars no matter the quality. I mean don't deny photos from coming on the site just have them be unfeatured, but for rare cars such as paganis or LaF don't leave them unfeatured because that's what people want to see is exotic and rare cars because you don't see those often. The main thing that's bothering most of us is that some photos won't even go up and some really rare cars are unfeatured. Who cares about the quality of a Bugatti pic it's still something that should be featured
waddle - As long as it is a legitimate spot, the photos are still officially accepted into the site. If you want to see what the site would look like if we featured every photo, here you go:
Sorry about this long post, but here goes:
I think I will get in on this discussion a little bit. @gregg, you may remember me, we had a conversation about this not too long ago.
My take on it: Only 3 months ago, about when I started posting, this site was different. Photos (at least mine) were automatically posted, regardless of the quality. I didn't upload any outright terrible photos, but some were questionable in my mind. I still posted them, just to "test the waters" and see what would or would not be accepted on this site. I never had any issues until about 3 weeks ago, when I attempted to post a couple photos I thought would definitely be approved (and maybe even featured) were rejected completely. Through @gregg's guidance, I now understand why they were not approved for posting, and the reasons why do not bother me that much as they are respectable. What does bug me however, is this: I still can't determine the purpose of this website. It seems that if the primary focus is photography, then those who just like spotting cars may feel left out or a little angry (after all, the site is titled ExoticSpotter, not ExoticPhotography). If the focus is spotting/cars, then the photographers are left out, perhaps feeling improperly seen as equivalent to just general spotters. If you try to blend the two, then conflicts of favoritism and inequality may arise.
So I leave a question: Why did YOU join this site?
I joined in order to:
Share my love of spotting the most beautiful cars in the world from my travels and hometown
To share some unique experiences and cars with others who enjoy very same thing
And most of all, to meet others, hear their experiences, and acquire knowledge from them.
Yep, we will be making some big announcements in the next couple of months. Will give a full overview of featured guidelines, so everyone knows what it takes to get featured.
OK, I'm fine with that, it doesn't bug me too much honestly. But please, let me ask you this - can you lay out a clear set of guidelines for what constitutes a featured photo? Obviously quality is a big one, but I just want to know to make sure I am not missing anything.
Lamborrari - spotters make up less than 1% of site visitors. That means 99.99% of the visitors want to see the best pictures - they don't want to sift through all the low-quality shots. If we let anyone's photos get featured, this site won't be around for long. Besides, if people want to see all the photos, just click on "All" tab, they're all there. No one said this site is fair, we want to see the best photos, period.
Yeah gregg that's why (as you probably saw) what the description was for my Vantage shot that just went up. ("Hopefully this doesn't get buried by the giant mass upload from Sam454") At the time I uploaded it, that was happening.
The unfeaturing doesn't bug me. That's not what the site is about. But ES is basically making it so you have spot really good cars and have really nice shots, which isn't something everyone can do because not every area has really nice exotics. I feel like this site is losing its true purpose - going out and trying to find cars that are harder to find and aren't seen very often. If you prioritize quality over quantity, you will lose your most faithful members simply because they don't want to put up with it.
For example, @Horse-power has not uploaded recently because I think he is done with having his shots unfeatured when he takes the time to go out, find cars, and post them here. West now posts daily on Autogespot whereas I think he only comes on here every couple days now because he is upset that he is one of the site's most loyal members yet doesn't get treated that way.
Simple explanation: It's the holidays, haven't had a chance to properly moderate the photos on a timely basis, so bad ones slip by. We still allow automated posts from people who's quality score is high, but if you upload a bunch of bad photos, I'm manually removing the quality score. Sam454 uploaded a bunch of low quality submissions, so his photos will be manually reviewed from now on before we accept any. In the near future, ALL photos will be manually reviewed before going on the site.
They just unfeatured a TON of pics. At least my Vantage shot just got featured, even though its a worse shot than the other one. And it just up? I uploaded it at 8:00pm et yesterday...
Nice find and combo! I'd take the LaFerrari. It honestly doesn't bother me too much, but it has certainly been bothering others so I hope they do something about it.
