Just saw this pic, late to the party, but good 411 for all, nonetheless. RE lens cap: dirt can be cleaned off. Carefully, with lens cleaner & lens tissue. Use a blast of air first, several options for air. The real danger, & expense, is a scratched lens. Not from the dirt, but from physical carelessness. Scratched lens means you have a new paper weight. Either use a UV filter to protect lens, or get a plastic or metal lens hood (not rubber), or a lens cap. My preference is a lens hood.
What can happen without a lens cap? I'm not too worried because my mom is actually the one who lost it because I had it with my camera on the counter and she moved it and it disappeared so if something happens to it in Indy, she'll buy me a new lens.
